SPECIAL  ORDERS #30: BGES Spring Project, Refreshing  Perryville

Perryville ended the 1862 Kentucky expedition of Braxton Bragg and put him on a road to ultimate removal as commander of the Army of Tennessee. The current signs on the state battlefield are over 20 years old and show significant damage with many being totally unreadable. BGES is replacing 15 signs during the spring of 2014. Sponsorship is $600 per sign — for that, you get your name on the sign as the sponsor. Take a look at the new signs: Perryville Replacement Signs.

Goal:  $8,200 by March 31, 2014.

Recently,  I was visiting one of my favorite battlefields at Perryville, Kentucky. My first  trip there had been over 20 years ago with the Civil War Society and Kent  Masterson Brown. At the time they had put in new interpretation and the park  looked spiffy. Since then the sparkling signs have become weather worn and  unreadable. The small friends group was soliciting funds to replace the signs. I  asked how many and was told 15. I asked the cost and then said "We will do it!"  They asked how many and I said "All!" They have spruced up the signs, corrected  errors and are ready to print and install the new ones. We expect all to be  installed by the time the spring touring season is full swing. So here I am --  four signs were immediately sponsored on word of mouth.

The  21st Wisconsin in the Cornfield (From the Starkweather's Hill sign)

I  am looking for 11 more sponsors at $600 per sign.

Click here to view the available signs. For  your tax deductible gift, you get your name or the right to dedicate the sign to  a person or soldier, living or dead -- thus memorializing them forever. If you  like you can have a smaller color print of the sign (18” x 24”) for just $35  more. BGES is working another time-sensitive project at North Anna and I would  like to get this completed by March 31, 2014 -- less than 3 weeks from now.

The  battlefield park at Perryville is expanding thanks to recent land acquisitions  and we have promised to play a role in expanding the park™s interpretive display  at the appropriate time. Any surplus revenues from this specific appeal will go  to our restricted fund to seed additional interpretation over the next 18  months.

We  would like to see a broad based participation in this project from our online  community -- our goal is 50 donors inclusive of our sign donors. If you cannot  or do not wish to sponsor a sign, you can still participate with a lesser gift.  We suggest a gift of $108.62 to commemorate the date of the battle (October 8,  1862) or a gift of $150 in honor of the Sesquicentennial of the war. Of course  the size of any gift is your decision but we hope that you will give something. Click here to make a gift.

Many  of you may not know of the battle -- the undisputed and most readable account of  the battle was completed by BGES friend, Kenneth Noe at Auburn University. His  book: Perryville, This Grand  Havoc of Battle is the best. We will be happy to send you a copy for  a donation of $50 (of which $25 is a tax-deductible). For $110 we will have it  personally autographed for you -- your tax-deductible portion will be $75. Click here to make a donation and get the  book.

Regardless  of your preference, I hope you will act on this opportunity today. Spring is  coming and this fine and important battlefield has a timeless story to tell --  you and the BGES will help tell it.

Thanks  so much
